_*What's on the Final:*_ There are 49 multiple choice with about
two-thirds of these are new info since the last midterm. There are
several pages of short answer, calculations, food sources, etc. Some
calculations won't be on the test-- so don't worry about calculating
chemical score, or BMR or energy requirements (***but you should know
how to calculate the number of calories in a person's diet and whether
they are following the dietary recommendations to reduce risk for heart
disease-- just like in midterm #2.). You will also need to know how to
do %Daily Value, protein requirement. Make sure you study heart
disease-diet info and risk factors (there will be a big question that
covers this material). Many questions have been discussed in class such
as what is homeostasis and describe a system under homeostatic control,
the RDA question, the comparison of vitamin categories, what is
osteoporosis and what is your risk, empty calories, etc. I suggest you
prepare these answers ahead of time and study them so that you can give
the best answer possible. You may also want to do these problems first
when you take your final. Note: Fluoride, Riboflavin, B6 and vitamin K
will not be on the final

You can view a blank copy of all 12 Chapter quizzes -- check the quick
link on the web site.

Here's a_* Bonus Question*_ for the Final (just answer on the test last
page) worth* 5 points*

A friend wants to lose weight and has found a supplement for sale on the
internet that claims to boost "fat burning" and aid in weight loss.
What advice would you give your friend about taking a dietary
supplement? (be sure to include issues about dietary supplement
safety/quality.) And what advice would you give your friend about how
best to lose weight-- be sure to include the key components to a sound
weight loss program.

Here's some "mom" advice . . . during finals week try to eat regular
(healthy) meals with plenty of fluids, you want to avoid getting sick.
Also, sleep is important even though it's tough finding the time, try to
get some! Fit in exercise or physical activity outdoors which is also a
great way to relieve stress, and of course, stay healthy!

Grades for Nut 10 will be posted on the web site by 6/18 and you can
come pick up your final exam next Fall quarter on T&Th from 12:15-1:30
in the TA office 1334 Meyer.

Thanks for a very enjoyable quarter -- you were lively and asked great
questions.
Hope you all enjoyed the class and that you gained some valuable
nutrition information that will stay with you the rest of your life.
Remember, your body is the only one you get in life-- take care of it
and you and your body will last a long time.

And of course. . . . . Eat your veggies (and exercise.)

Have a great Summer.

*Grade Boost Opportunity in Nutrition 10*!!

Here's a fabulous opportunity to boost your grade in Nut 10 and at the same time learn your Nut 10 "stuff" for the final.

Check the web site (teaching.ucdavis.edu/nut10) under MT 2 grades and you'll have a good idea on how you're doing in the class.
Your exam is available from Noah, Megan, Mary and Rachel during their office hours if you don't come to class and pick it up.

If you feel that your score doesn't reflect what you thought you knew for the test or you're interested in getting a BETTER grade than you're headed for in Nut 10, then here is an opportunity to improve your grade!
This is an* optional* opportunity (that is, NOT REQUIRED) and is available
until* Wednesday June 4th * by 2:30 p.m. (my last set of office hours for this-- NO EXCEPTIONS).

READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY AND FOLLOW THEM EXACTLY!

If you go through the following procedure (exactly), it will help your
grade: for example-- boost your course grade from a C to a C+, or a B to a
B+ or a B+ to an A- or even an A!!
*YOU MUST FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY AND SUBMIT YOUR FULL SET OF CHAPTER QUIZZES TO DR. APPLEGATE DIRECTLY AT OFFICE HOURS TO GET CREDIT.
*

This opportunity is open to anyone regardless of your score on the test. I strongly suggest those of you who are in the D or C range take advantage of
this-- it helps immensely!!

Now for the procedure:

*1. Complete each of the 12 Chapter quizzes -- fill out each answer completely using complete sentences for those requiring a written answer, calculations for those requiring it and fill in the blanks for food sources.*
*
*
*2. Tear out each Chapter quiz from your book and write your name and Student ID # on each page*

*3. Staple all 12 Chapter quizzes together making sure your ID# and name are clearly written on the first page.* (Please do not use a paper clip)

*4. Come to my office hours (remaining times plus some extra are listed
below) and HAND IT PERSONALLY TO ME - and we'll talk for a minute about your answers*
*(Note: You cannot have a "friend" drop it off!)*
* Last day (no exceptions)-- Wednesday June 4th)*

Note: A copy of blank quizzes will be posted on the web during finals week for you to use as a study aid as your copy will not be returned.
*
*
*OFFICE HOURS (3215 Meyer) FOR DR. A:*
*May 22nd 12-2 pm*
*May 27th 12-2 pm

*
*June 4th 1:30-2:30 pm (last chance!!)*

Subject: Extra Credit Lecture Wednesday!

Hi everyone --  We are nearing the end of the quarter and wanted to offer an EXTRA CREDIT opportunity.  You can earn 10 EXTRA POINTS (this represents 25% of a grade point in the class).

Details below:

*Ever dropped your late night DC pizza slice on the floor and thought, “no one’s looking, 10 second rule, so it’s fine!”

Come to an extra credit lecture on FOOD SAFETY and find out interesting facts on what is the most common cause of food borne illness, who is most susceptible, and whether the 10 second rule holds up scientifically.

The lecture will be held Wednesday May 21 at 7:40 pm in the Science Lecture Hall 123.

Attendance will be monitored and a short quiz administered for 10 extra credit points (1/4 of a grade!).  Bring your ID!!

Come and bring your friends from class and find out ways to protect yourself in the kitchen or at restaurants!

See you in class tomorrow (the midterm #2 exam will be passed back!)

Subject: Diet Project Due!

Hi everyone . . . . Your DIET PROJECT IS DUE TUESDAY MAY 6th

Here's some important info you'll need for completing (or starting) your diet projects. Remember as detailed at the beginning of the quarter, only original diet project forms from the course book are accepted.

1. There will be 2 (two) special sets of Diet Project office hours:
MONDAY May 5th
2-4 pm
1330 Meyer

5-7 pm
146 Olson

Drop in anytime !

Get your diet project checked off -- see if you passed for the full 40 points before submission on Tuesday

Mary ("diet project queen") Noah, Megan and Rachel-- the wonderful TAs for Nut 10 will be there with books, and calculators along with providing you with any help you may need.

Also, check out the web page http://teaching.ucdavis.edu/nut10 and link to Diet Project: look at "5 Simple Tips for Diet Project Success"
Other office hours for the TAs in 1334 Meyer:

Mary 9-10 am Thursday 5/1
Noah 12:15-1:30 pm 5/1

2. The Diet Project is due on Tuesday May 6th. Envelopes will be
passed out in class on that day (5/6) for you to submit your completed project. You will need to fill out three forms that are inside the envelope.

*Remember: You are required to submit your project on original color forms from the book.*

3. You can submit your project in class.

4. Or if you are not finished by that time, you have until 5 pm sharp
(not a minute later!) to turn in your project on Tuesday May 6th. After
this time, your project is graded late (20 point deduction.) The ONLY
place you can submit your project after class time is 1334 MEYER (the TA
office). If you drop off the project any other place, such as slip it
under my office door or leave it with our departmental office, you will
receive a 20 point DEDUCTION. So, again, only turn in the project at
1334 Meyer if you can not make the class submission time (10:30-11:50 am
in 123 Science Lecture Hall)*

Hope you're learning lots about your diet from this project.

Eat your veggies. . . . . .

Subject: First day of class

Hi! Hope all of you had a relaxing Spring break and you're refreshed because it's time to start the new quarter!

If you receive this message, you are either* enrolled* or on the* wait
list* for Nutrition 10. The first day of class is Tuesday --- April 1st from 10:30-11:50 in 123 Science Lecture Hall (near Briggs/Life Science)

Nut 10 is a big class with many people on the wait list (over 200!!) So to maintain your spot (if you are enrolled) or to get into the class (if you are on the wait list-- and many are added), here's some important
instructions:
*Note - First Day Attendance is mandatory for both enrolled and wait list students (if you want to add Nut 10)*

_*ENROLLED STUDENTS ONLY:*_

*1.* ENTER Science Lecture Hall -- ON TIME attendance the first day of class is MANDATORY

*2.* You will fill out an information card (PURPLE - passed out during class the first day).

*3.* Anyone who is pre-enrolled who shows up the first day (filling out the card) keeps their spot.
*4.* Anyone pre-enrolled but who DOES NOT attend the first day or does not fill out the info card does not remain enrolled in the class (you must drop via RSVP.)

_*WAIT LIST STUDENTS ONLY:*_

*1.* TO AVOID OVER CROWDING IN SCIENCE LECTURE HALL YOU WILL LINE UP OUTSIDE THE BUILDING ON THE PATIO TO THE RIGHT OF THE MAIN ENTRANCE (NORTH EAST CORNER) -- you may not enter the Science Lecture Hall

*2*. You will fill out an information card (YELLOW- passed out outside the lecture hall) and obtain a course syllabus (which is also available on line).
*
*
*3.* Anyone on the wait list who shows up the first day will potentially get into Nutrition 10). The number of people who are added from the wait list depends upon the first day attendance --* but usually 150 or more from the wait list are added* (so lots from the wait list get in-- it all depends upon who shows up the first day!)

*4.* PTA#s will be passed out on Tuesday April 1st and again on the 3rd and 8th depending upon final numbers and first day attendance -- you will be able to find out on Tuesday April 8th for those with high numbers whether you will be able to add as the number settle out.

*5*. Once you get a PTA#, add immediately and then you may attend class.

_*ALL STUDENTS - REQUIRED BOOK:*_

There is a REQUIRED workbook for Nut 10 available at the book store for about $75/./ This workbook contains all lecture material and power points, a course project that must be on original forms from the workbook and extra credit quizzes that must be submitted on original pages for credit NOT COPIES. NOTE: Used books purchased online or elsewhere will have missing pages, forms, quizzes.

Bring the book to class every day.

Get ready for a fast paced, practical, and fun course on virtually everything you want to know about nutrition.
If you want to know more about Nutrition 10 before class starts (exam dates, meet the TAs etc) then check out our web page:

http://teaching.ucdavis.edu/nut10/

If you have any questions, please e-mail me directly:
eaapplegate@ucdavis.edu

See you Tuesday!!

Until then, eat your vegetables.
